It's Now or Never! Future Discounting in the Application of the Online Privacy Calculus

Abstract

Many people engage in extensive use of networked digital systems despite concerns over their privacy, a phenomenon called the ‘online privacy paradox.’ Although privacy calculus theory offers a rational explanation for this behavior, it does not account for temporal dimensions. This study investigates how future discounting affects the trade-off between perceived privacy risks and benefits in the context of online self-disclosure.
